SKOWHEGAN — A Fairfield man in a stolen vehicle was arrested Monday after a police chase through East Madison that ended on a dirt road in Skowhegan.
David Michael Gilbert, 49, was taken into custody after the chase, which started just after noon with Madison police on Lower Mills Road. Pursuit continued south down Molunkus Road to state Route 150, where Skowhegan police had been alerted and were standing by with spike mats, Skowhegan police Chief Ted Blais said.

“Madison had a stolen car and they spotted this guy, and he started to speed up,” Blais said. “He was coming into our town, and that’s when we picked it up.”
Blais said Officer Timothy Williams was traveling north on Route 150, toward the area, when Gilbert apparently spotted him and swerved onto a dirt road driveway. The driveway is a dead end.
Gilbert jumped out, but Skowhegan officers caught him, Blais said. The spike mats were not deployed.
Gilbert was arrested and taken to the county jail.
Madison police Chief Barry Moores said in a voice message that Gilbert was not traveling at an excessive rate of speed, but did not stop for the officer when his siren and blue lights were displayed. Moores did not say why the officer initially tried to stop Gilbert.
Gilbert is charged with theft by receiving stolen property, failure to stop for a police officer and operating while his license is suspended.
A court date has been set for Wednesday. Gilbert does not have a lawyer yet, according to a jail intake worker.
