RICHMOND — A tour focusing on the history of Swan Island is planned Sunday.

The tour will be lead by Friends of Swan Island President Jay Adams, who is also president of Arnold Expedition Historical Society, docent for Pownalborough Courthouse in Dresden, and a member of tour-organizer Friends of Merrymeeting Bay.

The tour is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will include a ferry ride from Richmond across the Kennebec River to the island, which is a state wildlife management area, and a truck tour of the island and its historic homes.

Pre-registration and an $8 access fee are required and attendance is limited, according to a news release from Friends of Merrymeeting Bay, a Richmond-based environmental nonprofit organization. Participants may register by calling Robbins at 737-2239. Participants are advised to wear good walking shoes and bring drinking water.

The island previously was home to Perkins Township and was reportedly visited by Aaron Burr, Benedict Arnold and Col. Henry Dearborn.
