Top Maine Youth Volunteers sought

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King recently announced that The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards has begun its 19th annual search for Maine’s top youth volunteers. The program, which recognizes two students who have made meaningful contributions to their communities through volunteer service, will solicit applications from Maine residents in grades 5-12 through Nov. 5. Williams awarded Fulbright Grant

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — University of Rochester student Anaise Williams, of Belgrade, has been awarded a 2013-14 Fulbright U.S. Student Grant to advance her studies, perform research and teach English abroad while serving as young ambassadors to her host country.

Bushey joins Maine Conservation Corps

SMITHFIELD — The Maine Conservation Corps recently welcomed Whitney Bushey, of Smithfield, to serve as a team member and AmeriCorps volunteer for the 2013 season. Bushey is the daughter of Jo-Anne and Michael Bushey, also of Smithfield. The MCC conducts conservation projects throughout the state, including extensive recreational trail construction and rehabilitation. Bushey is a 2007 Messelonskee High School graduate; and a 2013 University of Maine graduate, where she studied wildlife ecology.

Assistance set for veterans, families

SKOWHEGAN — Trained volunteers from RSVP’s Veterans and Military Families program will be at the Town Hall, 225 Water St. from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, to assist veterans and military family members sign up for veteran’s benefits, health care services, and to enroll in MyHealtheVet.

Unity planned hikescheduled for Sept. 28

UNITY — Waldo County Trails Coalition will conduct a hike from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 28. The hike will start at the parking lot of the Sebasticook Regional Land Trust and will go to Unity College, through the college trails, along the wooded Coalition trail on the west side of Quaker Hill Road, and out to Quaker Hill Road about a mile from the college. A shuttle will be available at Quaker Hill Road to transport people at the end of the hike.
