WINSLOW — Defensive standards have always been high with Winslow field hockey. After all, this is the school that didn’t allow a goal all season in 1998.
This year’s Winslow team won’t do that, but names from the past like Brenda Beckwith and Emily Roy would surely approve of the kind of defense the Black Raiders have played this season.

On Thursday afternoon, Winslow ran its record this season to 11 wins without a loss, defeating Mt. View, 3-0. The Raiders have allowed a total of three goals this fall.
“I have an amazing defense,” said Winslow sophomore goalie Delaney Wood, who recorded her eighth shutout of the season. “They’re the best.”
Mt. View (7-4-0) came in with seven wins in its last eight games, and the one loss in that stretch was by one goal to unbeaten Nokomis. The Mustangs carried that momentum over to the first few minutes of Thursday’s game, but lost it when Brittany White one-timed a pass from Sarah Wildes for a goal barely five minutes into the first half. The Raiders kept their tempo going their way, as Brooke Haskell sent home a rebound with 15:51 left in the half.
“That’s the exact (phrase) I use is, ‘Set your tempo, and don’t lose control of it,’ ” Winslow coach Mary Beth Bourgoin said.
After a timeout, Mt. View played noticeably better over the rest of the half. Kersey Boulay began to jump-start the offense with long, accurate passes, and the Mustangs had five shots and four penalty corners over the final 11 minutes. Those chances nearly produced a badly-needed goal. Mt. View’s best chance came off the stick of Braley Leadbetter, but was deflected away by Katie Smith for a defensive save.
“We need to do more controlled passing, like passing to space,” Mt. View coach Gloria Hewett said. “We need to see the space that’s opening up.”
Early in the second half, Winslow twice came close to padding its lead on penalty corners. First, Mt. View’s Lindsey Moody was waiting in the middle of the cage for a defensive save. On Winslow’s next corner, Wildes got a pass on a play that left her wide open on the left side, but her rocket went just wide to the far side of the cage.
“They had great little controlled passing, little triangle passes,” Hewett said. “They also cut really well to the ball.”
Mt. View had another chance when Austyn Thomas broke free down the left side and beat two defenders to go 1-on-1 with the goalie. Wood came out and stuffed the shot, and though she clipped Thomas on the play for a corner, the shutout was preserved.
“I went out for the ball, and I kind of got her leg,” Wood said. “I was like, ‘Ooh. Ooh.’ Bethany Winkin knows what to do. She just hit it out. Even if it was a corner, that was better than a goal. It was definitely stressful, but you had to remain calm and know what to do.”
Winslow wrapped up the game with 8:01 left in the second half, when Wildes scored on a pass from Haskell.
