THORNDIKE — On Saturday afternoon at Mt. View High School, momentum was just a memory away.

Last week, the Dexter High School football team lost a close game to Washington Academy after holding a 14-point lead. This week, when Mt. View recovered a fumble in the end zone just before the half to cut the Tigers lead to seven points, the Tigers said to themselves, it won’t happen again.
“It was a very tough loss. I think we had a lot to prove to ourselves and our coaching staff,” Dexter quarterback Trevor Fogarty said. “We came out ready to go.”

Dexter scored three consecutive touchdowns in the second half, to pull away from the Mustangs and take a 34-13 Little Ten Conference win.

Dexter is now 3-2, while Mt. View is 2-3.

Fogarty accounted for 293 yards — 171 passing, 107 running  and 15 receiving — to lead the Tigers.
With the Tigers ahead 14-0, Dexter’s defense made a stand in the final minute of the first half, stopping the Mustangs on fourth and goal from the 1. But a fumble on the next play was recovered by Mt. View’s Chris Spaulding in the end zone for a touchdown, and the Mustangs went into the half trailing 14-7.

The Tigers dominated the third quarter. Dexter opened the second half with an 11-play, 64-yard drive, culminating with an 11-yard touchdown run by Fogarty.

After Daytona Gould’s interception at midfield, Dexter pushed its lead to 27-7 when Fogarty ran 43 yards for a touchdown with 17 seconds left in the third quarter.

“We just moved the ball around and shared the ball. Receivers made plays all day. The line started getting a good push in the second half. Everything just started clicking,” Fogarty said.

Fogarty’s 9-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Bartlett with 9:57 left in the game gave Dexter a 34-7 lead.

After stopping the Mustangs at the Dexter 18 on the game’s opening drive, the Tigers marched down the field, taking a 7-0 lead when Adam Wintle scored on a 4-yard run. Midway through the second quarter, Fogarty connected with Gould (seven catches for 144 yards) on a 68-yard touchdown play for a 14-0 lead.

Dexter’s defense focused on containing Mt. View running back Steven Davis, and held the dangerous runner to 56 yards on 16 carries. Davis’ final run of the game was his longest, a 13-yard touchdown run with 5:17 to play.

“(Davis) was the guy we needed to shut down, and I think we did that for the most part today. Our defense did a good job containing him,” Fogarty said.
