WINSLOW — The Winslow football team took care of business Saturday afternoon, securing a 6-0 record with a 60-6 win over Hermon at Gerry Poulin Field.
Business, however, is about to pick up.
The Black Raiders move on from Saturday’s victory to face defending Class C state champion and twice-beaten Foxcroft on Saturday, Oct. 19, then play at their neighboring rival Waterville in the regular season finale on Oct. 26.
“It is almost like our season is just starting,” Winslow coach Mike Siviski said after Saturday’s victory. “Really, I’m serious.”
The Black Raiders took little time putting Hermon (6-0) away, scoring 21 points in the first quarter and 27 in the second quarter to take a 48-0 lead at halftime. Dylan Hapworth got Winslow on the board with a 52-yard TD on the second play from scrimmage and Zack Guptill rushed for a 6-yard TD run on the Black Raiders second possession.
Quarterback Bobby Chenard scored from 1-yard out on Winslow’s third possession and hit Justin Martin with a 15-yard TD pass on the second play of the second quarter to push the lead to 28-0. Chenard added a 27-yard TD run and Martin a 21-yard interception return and Winslow was up 42-0 with 4:21 left in the half and pulled most of its starters.
“Today, we just needed to take care of business,” said Hapworth, who finished with 119 yards rushing, all in the first quarter, and kicked six extra points. “We didn’t want to slow down.”
Nate St. Amand tacked on a 93-yard TD run before the end of the half and Winslow led 48-0. The Black Raiders allowed just three first downs in the first half and held Hermon to just 61 yards.
Gage Naborowsky and Jacob Trask added touchdown runs in the fourth quarter for Winslow. St. Amand finished with 240 yards rushing. David Shepardson scored from 17 yards out in the fourth quarter for Hermon.
With the win secure, Winslow has a chance to look ahead. First up is a rematch with Foxcroft, which beat Winslow in the Class C state title game last fall.
“We definitely feel like we have some unfinished business with them,” Chenard said.
