The University of Maine at Machias women’s soccer team has seven players from Maine. Two of those are from central Maine and they’ve helped the Clippers become one of the best teams in the United States College Athletic Association.

Meagan Cope, a Dresden native and Hall-Dale graduate, and Sierra Tjelmeland (Windsor/Erskine) are both starting for UMaine-Machias, which is ranked eighth in the latest USCAA Power Poll.

The Clippers compete in the Yankee Small College Conference East Division, where they are 8-0-0 with 50 goals scored and one goal allowed.

Perhaps their most impressive win of the season was on Sunday. Playing for the third time in three days, UMaine-Machias went on the road and defeated the University of Maine at Farmington, one of the top teams in the North Atlantic Conference.

Cope, a freshman, has played in 15 games overall and started six. She has played mostly defense, and took a few turns in goal.

Tjelmeland, a sophomore, has started 12 of 13 games. She also plays defense and picked up an assist early this fall in a 6-0 victory over the University of Maine at Augusta.

The Unity College women’s soccer team has a YSCC quarterfinal playoff game at 3 p.m., today at Southern Maine Community College.

Unity has a 4-5-2 record this season, including a 1-1 tie with SMCC on Saturday. SMCC also defeated the Rams 4-1 on Sept. 21.

Unity has only two Mainers on its roster: Rangeley graduate Sierra Marchacos (who also plays basketball at Unity), and freshman Julieanna Scott, a Maranacook graduate. Marchacos has played nine games this season, with three starts, and has played 24 minutes in goal. Scott has not played this fall.

Freshman Makayla McCormick, one of six New Yorkers on the team, leads Unity with 16 points on seven goals and two assists. Eleven other players have scored between one and three goals. McCormick is one of five freshmen starting regularly for the Rams.

Although she earned all-state honors as a senior at Messalonskee High School last season, Lynnae Luettich never had attention-grabbing statistics. After scoring 30 goals in her high school career, Luettich went directly to Division I Appalachian State, where she has started eight games as a freshman.

While Appalachian State has struggled this fall with a 2-11-0 record and six losses by at least seven goals, Luettich is starting to heat up. She has scored in each of the Mountaineers’ last three games. In one of those games, a 4-3 overtime loss to Davidson, Luettich played 58 minutes.

Those three goals were the first of the season for Luettich, but she is now tied for the team lead in goals with two other players.
