The radio documentary about Morning Sentinel reporter Doug Harlow won the award for best new artist at the Third Coast International Audio Festival in Chicago on Sunday.

The piece, “Parts of Speech,” was produced by Emily Kwong, 23, of Southport, Conn., while she was a student at the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in Portland last spring. It was one of nine winning pieces chosen from among 269 entries in the festival.

Harlow uses an artificial voicebox to speak.

The gold award for best documentary went to the piece “Harper High School” by Ben Calhoun, Linda Lutton and Alex Kotlowitz, with co-producer Robyn Semien and editors Ira Glass and Julie Snyder for the national radio show “This American Life.”
