Firefighters warn drivers: Watch for trick-or-treaters
AUGUSTA — Augusta firefighters are urging drivers and parents to use caution Halloween night as youngsters make the rounds collecting candy.
Deputy Chief David Groder said drivers should move a little more slowly and be vigilant in looking for children walking along and across streets and roads.
Groder urged parents to outfit costumes with reflective outer wear to increase visibility to drivers. Each trick-or-treater should carry a working flashlight with fresh batteries, Groder said. It also is important that children wear costumes that do not restrict their vision.
Those who use lights to illuminate the inside of a pumpkin outside their homes should use a battery-operated light rather than a candle to prevent a flame from coming in contact with the costumes of those seeking treats.
“It’s always a good practice to check the collection of goodies for open or broken wrappers in the event someone has an ill intention,” Groder said.
