A Cornville man who allegedly threatened to kill people inside a local elementary school did not appear for a scheduled court date Wednesday because he is waiting to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, according to his lawyer.
James L. Mayo, 42, was arrested in September at the Cornville Regional Charter School, where he allegedly threatened to kill teachers inside the school as well as a Somerset County sheriff’s deputy who tried to arrest him.

Mayo did not appear at Skowhegan District Court, according to his attorney, Phil Mohlar, because he is awaiting psychiatric evaluation at Riverview Psychiatric Center to determine his competence and mental condition.
“His behavior indicated that he was clearly having mental difficulties and that a mental evaluation would be appropriate,” said Mohlar. He said the district attorney, Somerset County Superior Court Justice John Nivison and he made the recommendation.
The court ordered that Mayo be examined by the state forensic service, according to court records. The records state that his mental condition is being questioned due to behavioral observations made at the jail as well as his behavior at the time of the incident at the school.
A teacher at the school called 911 on Sept. 2 to report a man outside the school who had threatened to kill everyone inside the school and told them they were on his list of 200 people that he was going to kill, according to a police affidavit. The school was locked down while Mayo was outside making shooting motions with his hands, according to the affidavit.
When told he was under arrest, Mayo threatened the officer and refused to be arrested, according to the affidavit. He was shocked with stun gun once, ran off into the woods and had to be tracked down by a police dog and shocked again before officers could arrest him, according to the affidavit.
Mayo is being held without bail and is charged with terrorizing, criminal threatening, criminal mischief, refusing to submit to arrest or detention on two counts and violation of probation.
