ORONO —The University of Maine men’s hockey team scored two third period goals and Martin Ouellette stopped 23 shots and the Black Bears beat the University of Vermont 2-0 Friday at Alfond Arena.

Ben Hutton gave Maine (4-3-1, 1-1-1 in Hockey East play) a 1-0 lead 15 minutes, 16 seconds into the third period with a power-play goal. Devin Shore had the assists. Steven Swavely added a power-play goal with with about two minutes left.

Brody Hoffman had 36 saves for the University of Vermont (2-3-1, 1-2-0 in Hockey East play).

Men’s basketball

Rhode Island 86, Maine 59: Ifeanyl Onyekaba scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Rams beat the Black Bears in the season opener for both teams in Kingston, R.I.

Jarrelle Reischel added 18 points and Xavier Munford had 11 for Rhode Island.

Xavier Polalrd scored 18 points, while Dimitry Coronel had 14 for Maine. Zark Valjarevic added 10.
