NEW PORTLAND — A metal shop on River Road sustained minor damage in a fire Sunday morning.

Firefighters are not sure what caused the blaze, which originated from a wood furnace at J.R. Fabrication at 92 River Road, said New Portland Fire Chief Kip Poulin.

The fire was reported by a New Portland firefighter who lives near the shop and saw smoke at around 8 a.m. Sunday, Poulin said. The shop belongs to Justin Jordan, who lives on the property, he said.

When firefighters arrived the shop was smoldering and there was heavy smoke but no flames showing, said Poulin. There was not a lot of damage to the exterior of the structure, but there was smoke damage inside the shop, he said.

Firefighters from four departments were initially called because it was unclear how large the fire was, although it was ultimately handled by the New Portland and Anson fire departments, said Poulin. It took about three hours to extinguish the fire, he said.

No one was injured and the damage to the building was minimal, he said.

Jordan could not be reached for comment Sunday.
