Portland police say the victim of an assault that occurred downtown Monday is the production manager for the British singer-songwriter Elvis Costello.

Lt. Glen McGary said Wednesday that Milo Lewis, 59, of the United Kingdom told police that he was in Portland for Costello’s concert at the State Theatre.

Police charged Richard Sneddon, 45, with aggravated assault, saying he kicked Lewis, badly injuring his leg. Police say Sneddon asked for money from Lewis at 12:30 p.m. Monday on Congress Street near High Street. Lewis refused and Sneddon responded by pushing and kicking him as he tried to walk away, police said.

Lewis complained of leg pain and was taken to Maine Medical Center, where the injury required emergency surgery, police said.

Sneddon was found at 6:30 p.m. Monday in Monument Square, police said. The magnitude of the injury led police to file felony assault charges against Sneddon. He is being held on $1,000 bail in the Cumberland County Jail.
