BURLINGTON, Vt. — For the second night in a row, the University of Vermont pulled away from a third-period tie to deny Maine its first road victory of the men’s hockey season.

The Catamounts beat Maine 5-2 Saturday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse. On Friday, Vermont won by 3-2.

The Black Bears fell to 6-6-1 overall but remained at 3-2-1 in Hockey East. Only the first two games against Vermont counted in conference standings, and Maine split with the Catamounts (7-5-1, 4-4 HE) earlier this month in Orono.

Away from Alfond Arena, the Black Bears are 0-5-1.

With the game tied at 1 after two periods, the Catamounts came out blazing in the third. They scored within a minute after two quick passes from Anthony DeCenzo and Connor Brickley set up H.T. Lenz for a 2-1 lead.

They made it 3-1 only five seconds into a power play when Mario Puskarich knocked in a rebound.

The Black Bears pulled to within 3-2 after pulling goalie Martin Ouellette when Devin Shore tipped in a shot from the left point by Ben Hutton with just over two minutes remaining.

Vermont scored twice in the final minute with Ouellette on the Maine bench in favor of an extra skater.
