WATERVILLE — A teenager was charged with aggravated assault Saturday evening after police say he attacked a car with a baseball bat, injuring the car’s owner.

The teen was also at the center of a Cumberland Farms robbery in July that led to the arrests of four people.

Melvin Hubbard IV, 18, of Kimball Street, was arrested at his home at about 6 p.m., according to Waterville police Sgt. Dan Goss.

Goss said that when Hubbard struck the car with a baseball bat, glass flew up from the impact, injuring the eyes of the car’s owner, who Goss said is an acquaintance of Hubbard.

Goss said he didn’t know what caused the conflict, which occurred on Hathaway Street.

The victim was taken to Inland Hospital, where he was admitted for the injuries to his eyes.

Hubbard was arrested on a charge of violating conditions of release and two warrants in addition to the assault charge. He was taken to Kennebec County Jail.

Under Maine state law, aggravated assault happens when a person intentionally or recklessly causes serious bodily injury or injury with the use of a dangerous weapon, and in certain other instances.

It is a class B crime, punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.

In July, Hubbard was charged with theft after police said surveillance video at Cumberland Farms showed him taking a bag with $1,245 from the safe while an associate distracted the clerk. In that case, three other men learned about the crime and entered his College Avenue apartment to rob him of the money. All four fled the apartment through a kitchen window when police arrived and were arrested a short while later.
