WINSLOW – The Messalonskee hockey team made a statement when it beat perennial Eastern A contender Bangor in the season opener last week.

The Eagles made an even bigger one Saturday night.

Chase Cunningham, like he’s done so many times the last two seasons, put on a show with three goals and four assists to help Messalonskee pound Western A contender Falmouth 7-2 Saturday night at Sukee Arena.

“Falmouth is definitely a great team,” Cunningham said. “I think we made a statement. This gives us a lot of confidence.”

Senior forward Dan Condon also scored a hat trick for the Eagles (3-0-0), the two-time defending Eastern B champs.

Brandon Nale scored a goal and Jared Cunningham had five assists for Messalonskee.

Tyler Jordan and Isac Nordstrom scored for Falmouth (2-2-0).

“It was a good performance,” Messalonskee coach Mike Latendresse said. “This is a solid win for us. We should be proud of this one.”

Messalonskee jumped all over the Yachtsmen, scoring three goals in the first period.

Chase Cunningham had a hand in all three, scoring once and assisting the others.

“He’s fun to watch,” Latendresse said. “All of our skill players are.”

Condon got things rolling when he converted a one-timer deep in the slot past Falmouth goalie Ryan Bonnvie with 6 minutes, 11 seconds left in the first period.

Twenty-five seconds later, Chase Cunningham took a pass from Jared Cunningham below the right faceoff circle and ripped a shot past Bonnvie to make it 2-0.

“Things were working for us,” Chase Cunningham said.

Condon stuffed home a loose puck with 33.6 seconds left in the period to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead and a truckload of momentum heading into the second period.

The Eagles never looked back from there.

“The score was completely unexpected,” Latendresse said. “We were focused on playing 45 minutes and for the most part we did. This is a great win for our program.”
