STARKS — A husband and wife were arrested early Thursday morning after a reported domestic assault brought county deputies to their home on Thompson Bridge Road in Starks.

Deputy Mike Pike of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department said Sandra Lee Gulnick called police from a neighbor’s house around 2 a.m. to report her husband, Chris Allen Gulnick, had assaulted her and taken away her cellphone so she could not call the police.

Deputies arrived and arrested Chris Gulnick, 46, on charges of domestic violence assault, with prior convictions, and obstructing the report of a crime by taking his wife’s cellphone. He also was held on a probation hold.

Police also discovered that Sandra Gulnick, 42, had an outstanding warrant for her arrest on a charge of failure to appear in court on a bad check charge. Both were taken to the Somerset County Jail in East Madison.

Pike said Sandra Gulnick had marks on her face from the alleged assault.

“After that I found that Chris was on probation for basically the same thing against the same victim,” Pike said. “And also it was determined he had been drinking, which also is a violation of his probation conditions. I arrested him because obviously they needed to be separated.”

Chris Gulnick was convicted of domestic violence assault, Dec. 11, 2011, in Starks and was given a 30-day jail sentence, according to published court records. He also was convicted of violating a condition of release, Sept. 23, 2012, in Starks, for which he received a 30-day jail sentence.

Gulnick also was found guilty of domestic violence assault, Sept. 23, 2012, in Starks and was ordered to serve a 364-day jail sentence with all but 30 days suspended and two years of probation.

Sandra Gulnick was released from the jail on about $100 bail, according to a jail intake worker. Chris Gulnick must appear before a judge to secure his release from the probation hold, Pike said.
