I read the recent newspaper article about drivers who endanger state police troopers and other emergency responders by failing to slow down and move to the passing lane for parked emergency vehicles. I believe at least one reason for this failure is the woeful lack of general enforcement against speeders, tailgaters and other aggressive drivers on our highways.

Those of us who drive sanely (i.e., obey speed limits) take our own lives into our hands if we slow down and move over to the “demolition derby” lane as required by law. I move to that lane when I’m supposed to, but I have had some very close calls as a result. I feel state troopers’ pain, but I hope they feel mine.
