Gardiner officials
warn of flood chance
GARDINER — Officials in the city will be watching the Kennebec River over the weekend during a storm that is expected to bring up to two inches of rain and warm temperatures to the region.
Gardiner Police said in a news release there is a concern that ice on the river may break up and jam in Gardiner, causing flooding upstream, particularly in Hallowell and Augusta. Similar scenarios in the past, most recently in January 2010, have brought significant flooding in low-lying areas of both communities.
Gardiner officials urged residents along the Kennebec River and Cobbossee Stream to keep an eye out for flooding.
