WATERVILLE — Police are investigating a stabbing on Prospect Street Monday that sent a man to a Portland hospital with a serious wound to his torso, according to Deputy police Chief Charles Rumsey.

Rumsey wound not identify the man because he is a victim and did not commit a crime, he said. No one has been charged in the stabbing.

A Prospect Street resident called police at 4:50 p.m. to report a fight among a group of men on and near the street, Rumsey said.

Rumsey said when police arrived, one of the men “was suffering from a stab wound or some type of cut to his torso.”

“He was uncooperative with us as far as discussing what happened and who else was involved,” Rumsey said. He said the man refused treatment at the scene and got a ride to MaineGeneral Medical Center’s Thayer Center for Health by private vehicle.

Police spoke to people in the neighborhood and later learned the man’s wound was serious and he was transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland for emergency surgery, Rumsey said.

By midafternoon Tuesday, detectives were still investigating the stabbing, but had not yet been able to speak to the victim.

“There are several other leads we’re attempting to follow up on, but without a victim reporting a crime to us and being uncooperative with our investigation, it will be difficult to charge someone,” Rumsey said.

Police always are concerned for the public when someone has been stabbed and the person responsible is still out there, he said.

“We are still attempting to piece together what happened last night, who was involved, why the altercation occurred, and who is responsible for stabbing the male we made contact with,” Rumsey said.

Rumsey asked that anyone who may have seen something or has information about the stabbing call police at 680-4700.

Stabbing in this case is a class B felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison and up to a $20,000 fine, according to Rumsey.

Prospect Street is in the city’s North End.
