WINSLOW — A Pan Am Railways train got stuck in the mud Tuesday night and remained idling Wednesday as railroad crews worked on tracks off Bay Street.
The train’s engine, parked near the intersection of Bay Street and Clinton Avenue, was hauling several cars, including one that was listing to the west, wheels sunk and the tracks beneath it sunk in the mud.
About a dozen rail workers on Wednesday were using shovels, pick axes and brooms to clean and chip away at ice and snow around the tracks a couple of cars behind the listing one.
A call to Pan Am, based in North Billerica, Mass., for comment was not returned by early Wednesday evening.
Town Manager Michael Heavener said he spoke with the town’s public works director, who said water runoff from the hill above Bay Street is getting into the tracks and freezing, causing problems for the trains.
Deane Nason, a broker and part-owner of Century 21 Nason Realty, was watching the goings-on from his desk, which overlooks the tracks on Bay Street.
He said that two weeks ago, a similar incident occurred and railroad employees worked all night and half the following day to fix the problem.
“I don’t know, actually, what time it (train) went off the track last night, but it was off at 7 o’clock this morning when I came down here,” Nason said. “They’ve been working all morning. They’re using my parking lot to park their vehicles.”
