Our drinking water is top secret.
PUC Rule 660 makes everything about our drinking water systems top secret to everyone, except for the government and bill collectors. Our local water districts can release only what the government orders them to.
Last week, the paper contained an article about the drinking water situation in Charleston, W.Va. Did anyone else notice that they do not name the chemicals?
The right of the public to know anything of consequence is nearly impossible, unless you are maybe Eric Snowden.
For 23 years, I have been a consultant of safe drinking water systems. I wish I could assure the public that Maine drinking water is protected, unfortunately I know too many communities where regulations are just plain ignored.
In the past, I could take state records and show where these areas were being ignored, but no longer.
Ignorance is bliss!
