AUGUSTA — Former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell will address Maine lawmakers this week.

The former Democratic senator will give a speech to the joint Legislature on Tuesday on his work with The Mitchell Institute, which provides scholarships for high school students to attend postsecondary degree programs.

After his speech, there will be an unveiling of a portrait of Mitchell that will be displayed in the Hall of Flags.

Mitchell served in the U.S. Senate from 1980 to 1995, including six years when he served as Senate Majority Leader.

In 1995, President Bill Clinton appointed Mitchell to be his special envoy to the peace negotiations in Northern Ireland.
