Police believe a driver’s medical condition contributed to a car crash at the Maine Turnpike’s Maine Mall Road toll plaza Monday morning which slowed traffic for about a half-hour and sent two people to the hospital.
The crash, at the plaza off the southbound lanes at mile 45, was reported at 9:10 a.m.
A southbound car drifted onto the soft shoulder of the ramp and hit the guardrail, then over-corrected to the left, crossing the lanes and hitting a concrete barrier alongside the toll plaza, said Trooper Duane Doughty, who responded to the crash.
The driver, John Charette, 72, and passenger, Angie Charette, 74, were taken to Maine Medical Center with back, neck and shoulder pain, police said.
