AUGUSTA — Emily Quirion of Cony High School and Anna Mackenzie of Nokomis are among the 10 girls named Miss Maine Basketball semifinalists on Wednesday.

Finalists will be announced after the completion of the state tournament, and the winners of Miss and Mr. Basketball will be named at an awards ceremony on March 7 at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

Joining Quirion and Mackenzie as semifinalists are Allie Clement (McAuley), Olivia Smith (McAuley), Nina Davenport (Freeport), Tiana-Jo Carter (Lake Region), Parise Rossignol (Van Buren), Hannah Shaw (Mt. Desert Island), Raychel Alley (Stearns) and Alison Furness (Wells).

The semifinalists for Mr. Basketball are Dustin Cole (Bonny Eagle), Michael McDevitt (Greely), Isaiah Bess (Hampden), Zach Gilpin (Hampden), Jon Phelps (Mt. Desert Island), Isaiah Stone-Patterson (Oceanside), Trevor Lyford (Penquis), Justin Zukowski (Portland), Jayvon Pitts-Young (Portland), Serge Nyirikamba (Waynflete) and Jacob Moody (Wells).

The McDonald’s All-Star games will be held Saturday, March 8, at the Cross Center. Local selections to the A/B East girls team includes Quirion, Gardiner’s Ally Day, Messalonskee’s Kelsey Mayo, Mt. Blue’s Miranda Nicely and MacKenzie and Taylor Shaw from Nokomis. The boys A/B East team includes Messalonskee’s Jordon Holmes, Nokomis’ Andrew Cartwright and Winslow’s Trevor Lovely. Selected to the C/D West girls team were Kori Coro of Forest Hills, Hall-Dale’s Allison Crockett, Monmouth’s Kylie Kemp and Madison’s Cristie Vicneire and Kirsten Wood. Mike LeBlanc of Forest Hills is one of the team’s coaches. The C/D West boys team includes Monmouth’s Marcques Houston and Valley’s Dylan Belanger.

As a Valley High School player, Luke Hartwell won four state championships. Now as the Cavaliers’ head coach, he’s following the blueprint designed by his high school coach, Dwight Littlefield.

Throughout the regular season, Hartwell kept a steady rotation of players, and that hasn’t changed in the Western Class D tournament. In Wednesday’s 50-40 semifinal win over top seed Forest Hills, eight Cavaliers saw playing time throughout the game.

“This group, even though we have a lot of seniors, there wasn’t a lot of playing together yet. We didn’t have that chemisty,” Hartwell said. “Now they’re starting to get it. Using our bench all year long is starting to pay off. I have eight or nine guys I can go to.”

Edward Little 5-foot-6 guard Calli Murray hardly made her presence felt in the scorebook Wednesday, scoring just two points in a 61-43 victory over Cony.

But Murray played one of the more pivotal roles for the top-seeded Red Eddies (19-1).

“We had her defend Emily Quirion,” EL coach Craig Jipson said. “She did a great job. It’s not easy guarding her.”

Murray held Quirion to just two field goals and eight points.

“That’s practically unheard of,” EL guard Kory Norcross said. “Calli was awesome. She played great defense, and that was the difference.”
