BANGOR — Carson Puriefoy scored 24 points as Stony Brook held off a late rally to beat Maine, 83-79 Sunday.

Stony Brook maintained its place one game behind Vermont atop the America East Conference standings, with a game at Burlington on Thursday for a first-place showdown.

Eric McAlister and Jameel Warney each pumped in 15 points for Stony Brook, with Anthony Jackson adding another 14. The Seawolves were 30 of 66 from the field and were 19 of 23 from the free throw line.

Xavier Pollard and Till Gloger each scored 21 points for Maine, with Shaun Lawton adding 10 points. Pollard pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the Black Bears.

Maine shot 52.8 percent from the field (28 of 53) but was outrebounded by the Seawolves 37-30 and managed just five offensive boards while committing 15 turnovers.

Women’s basketball


Central Maine Community College 100, UMaine-Augusta 48: Susie French scored 27points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Mustangs to the win in the Yankee Small College Conference championship game Sunday in South Portland.

Mt. Blue grad Gabby Foy scored 10 points for CMCC (26-2), which led 57-21 at the half. Samantha Bruce of Madison also scored 10 points for the Mustangs.

Richmond’s Jamie Plummer led UMaine-Augusta (15-10) with 17 points.

On Saturday: Monmouth’s Kevin Desmond took second place in the 600 meters for the University of Southern Maine at the New England Division III men’s track and field championship in Cambridge, Mass. Desmond ran the race in 1 minute, 21.85 seconds… Winslow’s Ryan Turner tied for fifth place in the pole vault for USM, with a vault of 13-11 ¼.
