Police block theft of firearms from armory

AUGUSTA — A timely arrival by police apparently foiled an attempted theft of firearms Saturday night at the Augusta State Armory, Western Avenue.

Lt. Kevin Lully said all the firearms were recovered.

“It looks like (police officers) may have interrupted things,” he said on Sunday. “It looks like they gained access and started to stage some firearms for theft.”

Lully said the call came in about 9:20 p.m. Saturday. Officers were back at the scene at 7:33 a.m. Sunday.

Lully said few details were available and that the investigation was continuing.

The Ancient Ones of Maine, a pre-1840s living history club, hosted an Outdoor Sports and Gun Show on the weekend at the armory. Organizers of the show could not be reached by telephone on Sunday.

Dan Nadeau, who is listed as the contact person for Maine Armory Rentals, said he had no comment Sunday afternoon on reports that firearms were taken from the Augusta Armory.

Saturday: at 10:50 a.m., a caller came into the Augusta Police Department, Union Street, to report harassment.

12:06 p.m., an unidentified person was arrested at Walmart, Civic Center Drive, on a charge of theft.

2:58 p.m., a caller from Deer Ridge Lane reported a disturbance/disorderly conduct.

8:42 p.m., a caller from Sparrow Drive reported a burglary.

At 4:39 p.m., Paul R. Achorn, 56, of Chelsea, was arrested on a charge of operating under the influence following a report of a motor vehicle accident in front of the Maine Department of Agriculture building on Cony Road.
