workshops set for April 2

Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, local adult and community education programs and community sponsors offer a workshop Grow Your Own Organic Garden at more than 35 locations to help gardeners learn to grow food organically.

Join MOFGA on April 2 (with alternative dates in some communities) from 6 to 9 p.m. for an evening workshop on growing your own garden. Instructors are experienced MOFGA farmers or gardeners from your region. Learn the basics of soil science and how to enrich your soil and manage nutrients to produce healthy, high-yielding plants.

The course will also cover the basics of making and using compost; of rotating crops and incorporating green manures in the garden; distinguishing between cultivated plants and weeds; and basic weed, insect and disease management.

These workshops are open to the public and to people of all gardening skill and experience levels. They provide the skills and knowledge needed to transition from conventional to organic gardening. Most locations charge a $5 materials fee to cover the cost of handouts.

Workshop locations are posted at www.mofga.org and are updated weekly. The Maine Adult Education website, www.maineadulted.org, also lists workshops.
