STARKS — Starks Selectmen recently awarded Justine (Lewis) Taylor the town’s Boston Post Cane, an honor bestowed on the municipality’s oldest citizen. Taylor was born Oct. 29, 1923. She grew up in Skowhegan and married Austin Taylor upon his return from service in World War II.

The newlyweds purchased a farm in Starks in 1949 and began milking cows and managing woodland. Their household grew to include five children before Austin passed in 1963. Taylor’s work life, in addition to mother, included farmer’s wife, Skowhegan spinning mill worker, Starks corn shop employee and Lakewood Theater staff. She continues to reside in the home that she and Austin bought 65 years ago.

Attending the cane presentation were Justine, Selectmen Joe Miller and Paul Frederic (nephew), her four children that live in Maine including Karen Fatz, Carol Smith, Brenda Lovejoy and Gary Taylor and her granddaughter Audra Carter. Absent was Justine’s oldest child Vicky Hillman, of Idaho.
