AUGUSTA — A man charged with shooting a woman in her Gardiner home as her six children reportedly huddled in a separate bedroom pleaded guilty Tuesday to illegal possession of a firearm and reckless conduct.

Sean R. Kingston, 38, of Wiscasset, was sentenced in Kennebec County Superior Court to five years in prison with all but two years suspended and four years’ probation.

Gardiner police officers who responded to the 30 Costello Road home on Dec. 7. 2013, reported finding Shawna Snyder in a bedroom with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. The spent round was recovered between the mattress and the mattress cover.

According to an affidavit by Gardiner police Detective Michael Durham, police initially were told the couple found a gun in a field and were looking at it when it went off. Later, Kingston told police it was his handgun and it went off accidentally while they were in her bedroom.

The woman later was reported to be recovering from surgery.

Kingston was convicted of a felony in 1997 and prohibited from having a firearm, according to the report.
