VASSALBORO — The Vassalboro Business Association recently announced two winners of its $500 scholarships. They are Rebecca Reed, who plans to attend Gordon College, and Walker Mark Thompson, who plans to attend Kennebec Valley Community College, both of Vassalboro.

Reed’s dream is to enrich the lives of others through music. She plans to become a music educator, and eventually obtain a master’s degree in performance. She has been an active volunteer with the American Cancer Society.

Thompson loves to work outside. He has been a volunteer firefighter in Vassalboro since the age of 17. He has participated in the Trek Across Maine for the last four years to raise money for the American Lung Association. He loves mentoring children. He has played hockey since he was 3. He was the recipient of the Nate Frost award and the All State Award for Defense. This past season, he was selected assistant captain and played in the first Winter Classic All Star game.
