CARIBOU — Officials say a powerful thunderstorm disrupted Memorial Day activities in northern Maine.

Meteorologist Joe Hewitt from the National Weather Service says the storm produced gusts topping 30 mph and hail that was as big as nickels and half-dollars. He says the ground in Easton and part of Presque Isle was covered with hail after the storm passed through between 11 a.m. and noon Monday.

Officials say the storm passed just south of Caribou, causing rain during the city’s parade and wreath-laying ceremony. But the events continued.

Forecasters say there’s the potential for scattered showers and thunderstorms for the remainder of the day.
