On May 8, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, also chairman of the Republican Governor’s Association, said of Maine’s gubernatorial campaign, “This is one of the top 5 races in the country for the Republican Governor’s Association. We’re going to spend a lot of time and resources up here.”

Dark money is money given by anonymous donors. Secretive nonprofit groups can take money from foreign citizens, foreign labor unions, and foreign corporations. With a savvy attorney, a foreign donor can pump millions into a nonprofit without even the nonprofit knowing the money’s true origin.

Sen. Angus King said, “Dark money has an overwhelmingly negative influence in our political system — things are even worse than I thought.”

One can wonder how much of Gov. Christie’s “time and resources” come from dark money.
