The Children’s Discovery Museum will honor a man who was instrumental in its founding by dedicating a room to him on Friday.

The room the museum makes available for birthday parties will be named the Calligan Party Room in honor of Chuck Calligan, an accountant from Manchester who died in November at the age of 60.

The dedication, scheduled for 5:30 p.m., is open to the public.

Calligan and his wife, Debra, helped in the 1980s to open the Children’s Discovery Museum, which provides a place for children and their caregivers to play and learn. The museum opened in 1992 on Water Street and moved into its Capital Street location in 2009.

“We are pleased to dedicate our birthday party room to Chuck, who gave many hours of his time in the formation of the Children’s Discovery Museum and as treasurer for the board of directors,” Executive Director Carrie Arsenault said in a release. “I speak for all nonprofits when I say it takes many hands to keep us afloat. It is with much gratitude that I thank Chuck, Debra, and all former founders and board members for all they have done for CDM.”
