GARDINER — Gardiner Area High School has announced its top 10 seniors for the class of 2014.

Matthew Clark, son of John and Jill Clark, of West Gardiner, is valedictorian. He is a Gardiner Scholar, a member of the National Honor Society who has maintained highest honors throughout high school and a past Dirigo Boys State delegate. Clark is a member of Class Council, was president of his class for three years, has been a Student Council representative for four years and currently serves as its vice president. He is a member of the Math Team, the World Languages Club, currently serving as its president, and was a member of the prom committee. He is a member of chorus, Select Choir and jazz ensemble. He has participated in District III music festivals, the All-State Music festivals and Jazz All-State music festivals. Clark has been a cast member in high school drama and musical productions, has participated in the Literary Festival and was a regional and state finalist in the Poetry Out Loud competition. He has participated in sports including baseball, track and field and golf, serving as captain of the golf team this year. Clark has been the recipient of numerous honors including awards in honors science, honors English, AP biology, AP chemistry, AP literature, Latin I, II and III, the Rotary Student of the Month Award, the Phi Beta Kappa Maine Achievement Award, the Bausch and Lomb Science Award and the Dartmouth Book Award.

In the community, he has volunteered as a director for Gardiner Regional Middle School drama productions, at First Baptist Church of West Gardiner, the high school’s Thanksgiving basket drive nd with the Day of Caring project. He enjoys golf, music, singing and playing the guitar. Clark will attend Emory University in the fall, with a major in biology.

Kristin Cosgrove, daughter of James and Ann Cosgrove, of West Gardiner, is salutatorian. She is a member of the National Honor Society, maintaining highest honors throughout high school, and was chosen as the 2010 Maine Scholar Leader. Cosgrove is a member of chorus and Select Choir. She has participated in sports including dance team and cheering. She was named Most Improved Cheerleader in 2014 and received a place on the All-Academic Cheerleading Team. She has been the recipient of numerous honors including awards in algebra I, honors algebra II, honors geometry, honors investigative science, AP biology, lab chemistry, honors English, AP literature and composition, honors world cultures, honors American studies, honors US history, French I, II, III and IV, career and technology, health, wellness I and II, as well as the Geneva Swift Writing Award.

In the community, she volunteers at MaineGeneral Medical Center’s Gray Birch Nursing Home, assisting special needs children with horseback lessons and as a youth group leader with her church. She enjoys yoga, working out, horseback riding and dance. Cosgrove will attend the University of Maine in the fall, with a major in psychology.

Lauren Slade, daughter of Daniel and Janet Slade, of Gardiner, is ranked third. She is a Gardiner Scholar and a member of the National Honor Society, currently serving as its president. She is a member of the Math Team, serves as class treasurer, is a Student Council representative and was a member of Class Council. She has participated in sports including lacrosse, indoor track, outdoor track and soccer, currently serving as captain. Slade has been the recipient of numerous honors including awards in geometry, English, pre-calculus, science, history, French and the Wellesley Book Award.

In the community, she volunteers at a day care, with the youth soccer and basketball programs and with the Day of Caring project. She enjoys skiing.

Slade will attend the George Washington University, with a major in international affairs.

Emalee Couture, daughter of Mike and Kim Flynn, of West Gardiner and Steve and Lisa Benner, of Farmingdale, is ranked fourth. She is a member of the National Honor Society, an AP scholar and the recipient of numerous honors including awards in health, wellness, statistics and trigonometry and Latin III and IV. Couture is a member of the Math Team and a representative of Student Council, currently serving as secretary. She is a member of band, jazz ensemble, and Band Board, currently serving as its president, and has assisted with several of the Pizazz productions. She has participated in sports including basketball, field hockey and track.

In the community, she volunteers with the youth basketball and field hockey programs and with Day of Caring. Couture will attend the University of Maine, with a major in biomedical engineering.

Camden Cone, daughter of Marc Cone and Deborah Sparrow, of Gardiner, is ranked fifth. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the recipient of several honors including awards in science, Spanish and history. Cone has served as class secretary and as a member of the Math Team. She has participated in sports including field hockey, basketball, softball and track and field.

In the community, she volunteers with the youth basketball and field hockey programs. Cone will attend Connecticut College in the fall.

Brooke Brochu, daughter of Donald Brochu and Lori Robinson, of Pittston, is ranked sixth. She is the recipient of numerous academic awards including world history, investigating science, algebra I, US history, lab biology, lab chemistry, American studies and life and work. Brochu was a backstage crew member for musical productions at the high school and in the community has volunteered with clean up in area cemeteries, assisting with yard work, and helped with the Day of Caring project. She enjoys dancing.

Brochu will attend the University of Maine at Augusta, with a major in liberal studies.

Trevor Quirion, son of Timothy and Cheryl, of Randolph, is ranked seventh. He is a member of the National Honor Society and a past member of the Drama Club. Quirion is the recipient of several academic awards including wellness II, lab chemistry and US history. He has participated in sports including lacrosse, indoor and outdoor track and soccer. For soccer, he received a place on the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference first and second teams. He received the distinction of KVAC Scholar and a place on the KVAC All-Academic Team.

Quirion will attend Wentworth Institute of Technology, with a major in mechanical engineering.

Allyson Day, daughter of Steven and Dianne Day, of West Gardiner, is ranked eighth. She is a member of the National Honor Society, currently serving as its vice-president. Day is also a member of the Math Team, Class Council, the World Languages Club, currently serving as its treasurer, and a Student Council representative. She is a member of the high school band and Band Board, currently serving as its treasurer. Day has participated in sports including basketball, lacrosse, and soccer, currently serving as captain. She has received a spot on the KVAC first and second teams for soccer, KVAC All Defensive Team and Maine MacDonald’s All Star Team for basketball and KVAC All Rookie Team, KVAC first team and was named KVAC Player of the Year for lacrosse.

In the community, she volunteers as a coach in youth sports, at a retirement community, at the high school’s annual science fair and with the Day of Caring project. Day will attend Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the fall with a major in biomedical engineering.

Kayla Moody, daughter of Jackie and Maurice Millett, of West Gardiner, and Brad and Kim Moody, of Augusta, is ranked ninth. She is a past member of the Health Team, the junior varsity basketball team and her church youth group. Moody is the recipient of several honors including awards in geometry, American studies, lab biology and Student of the Month.

In the community, she has volunteered at the Gardiner Church of the Nazarene and as a coach with the youth basketball program. She enjoys playing basketball and spending time with her family. Moody will attend Kennebec Valley Community College in the fall, with a major in respiratory therapy.

Madison Cutler, daughter of Troy and Kathleen Cutler, of Pittston, is ranked 10th. She is a member of the National Honor Society and recipient of the Rotary Student of the Month Award. Cutler has participated in sports including soccer, basketball and lacrosse. She is a member of the band and jazz ensemble as well as a past member of Select Choir, the Civil Rights Team and the Health Team.

In the community, she has volunteered with the youth basketball program. Cutler will attend Western New England College in the fall with a major in civil engineering.
