The saying, “Good things come to those who wait” seems especially appropriate as the citizens of Augusta go to the polls on Tuesday to vote on a much-needed expansion and renovation for Lithgow Library.

The building’s needs have been well-documented and studied over the last 10 years, and the situation is now critical. Despite being one of the most visited and beloved places in Augusta, with more than 133,000 visitors last year, the building cannot continue to operate in its current condition.

Lack of space for teens and children’s collections means limited access for reading programs, and that is dangerously shortsighted. Many cities are expanding libraries and early literacy programs because nurturing a love of reading and learning is the key to educational success. Research shows that if children do not read at grade level by the third grade, then their chances of graduating from high school are significantly decreased.

Lithgow is an economic driver. When someone in our community is unable to afford a computer or Internet service, the library offers free computer access and job search assistance. Our downtown renaissance needs a vibrant Lithgow Library to contribute to the quality of life for city residents and visitors.

The Friends of Lithgow has raised private money to offset the costs of the project, making this a model of public-private partnership. The City Manager William Bridgeo’s proposal for the financing of the project is innovative and unanimously supported by Mayor William Stokes and the City Council.

No other destination in Augusta attracts so many people across all age groups and backgrounds. Lithgow’s expansion and renovation will enable it to flourish into Augusta’s modern community center, with books, music, educational programs, cultural offerings and resources for all of us.

The wait is over, Lithgow’s time is now.

We urge Augusta residents to go to the polls on Tuesday and vote “yes” for Lithgow Library.
