Give the general credit. For all of the positive contributions Gen. James Campbell and his unit have bestowed upon Maine over the years with community service (for training), their national disaster assignments at home and military actions overseas.

It is my impression that Gov. Paul LePage and Campbell, working in concert, are standing to retain what now exists and not downsize the 133rd Engineering Battalion as has been directed by the Obama administration. It is my understanding that the U.S. Army decides what is best, and we can only request our desires to them.

Over the years as a Boy Scout volunteer, I experienced firsthand the tremendously significant innovative readiness training the 133rd has accomplished in our communities and our youth camps. I totally support their mission and applaud their accomplishments.

The 133rd Engineering Battalion is far too important to the residents of Maine to permit it to be moved or downsized. Any change would mean more lost employment.

In the final analysis, I hope that the correct insight will prevail and the state of Maine will retain the 133rd Engineering Battalion to continually serve as diligently in the future as it has in the past. If it is reassigned, however, it would be Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel’s decision, and not Campbell’s or LePage’s.
