David Bustin easily won a challenge from fellow Democrat Louis Sigel Tuesday night to win the right to represent Democrats in the Senate District 14 race in November.
Bustin won 1,440 to 481, according to results gathered from the 11 cities and towns in the Kennebec County district. Bustin now faces former Sen. Earle McCormick, R-West Gardiner, in the fall election.
Senate District 14 covers Chelsea, Farmingdale, Gardiner, Hallowell, Manchester, Monmouth, Pittston, Randolph, Readfield, West Gardiner and Winthrop.
In House District 82 — Litchfield, Wales and part of Monmouth — Republican Randall Greenwood defeated Scott Williams in the primary, 335-250. Greenwood will face Democrat Rachel Sukeforth in the November general election.
The fall Senate race will be a rematch between Bustin, a former Hallowell mayor who served in the Legislature in the 1970s, and McCormick, who served four years in the House and six in the Senate before deciding not to run for reelection in 2012.
In 2004, the men faced off in a House District 79 race — Farmingdale, Hallowell and West Gardiner — where McCormick bested Bustin 2,877 to 2,396.
In 2012, Bustin lost to Patrick Flood, R-Winthrop, 10,309-10,031 in a Senate district made up of most of the same towns as the current district.
