A woman’s attempts to avoid police triggered a report of suspicious activity that then led to her arrest on Thursday afternoon.

Gardiner police received a call from Summer Street reporting that a woman was seen climbing into the trunk of a car. Then two other people got into the car and drove off with the woman in the trunk.

Police stopped the car near the Gardiner-Randolph bridge and found that the woman in the trunk was Staci Ann King, 28, of Litchfield.

There were four warrants out for King’s arrest, and she was a suspect in a forgery case Gardiner police had been investigating. Chief James Toman said King has been traveling in car trunks to avoid arrest.

King was arrested on the warrants and was charged with unlawful possession of a scheduled drug because she had a hypodermic needle on her that showed traces of a drug, Toman said. She also was charged with forgery in connection to the department’s investigation into forged prescriptions.

Toman said he appreciates the attentiveness of the person who called the department.

“If it wasn’t for that person being heads up in reporting something suspicious — and that was certainly something suspicious — then we’d probably still be looking for her, and she’d probably still be out committing additional crimes and trying to acquire drugs by any means possible,” he said.
