ANSON — A postal worker was able to escape injury and save the mail she was carrying when her vehicle erupted in flames Monday afternoon.
“I don’t know what happened,” said Sheryl Lake, a U.S. Postal Service worker, who was completing her daily deliveries on Horseback Road at around 1:15 p.m. Monday. “All of a sudden there was black smoke pouring out of the hood.”
Lake was able to grab the remaining mail and only lost a few postage stamps in the fire, which destroyed her white Jeep Wrangler. There were no injuries reported.
The cause of the fire appears to be a problem with the engine, said Anson Fire Chief Jeremy Manzer.
“Luckily she only had a few houses left and was near the end of the route,” he said.
The fire, near 32 Horseback Road, reduced traffic to one lane for about an hour.
