The subject of an editorial, “School mascots shouldn’t invoke racial stereotype” (June 4) concerned itself with the issue of sports logos and cultural sensitivity. Perhaps it is time for change, now that we’ve grown to understand and appreciate how certain labels might not reflect the current attitude toward various groups, as they did 50 or 100 years ago, .

The obvious name of a specific culture or race for sports teams, at any level, seems contrary to our lifestyle today. So perhaps it is time for Skowhegan to search for an innovative alternative. I’m not so sure about the other two schools mentioned in the editorial. Both Nokomis and Wells high schools’ mascots are Warriors. A closer look at warrior gives us the definition: a fighting man or soldier. The definition makes no mention of any culture or ethnicity, so perhaps asking entire school systems to change might not always be necessary or in the best interest of the schools.

Hopefully, the most obvious changes that are needed will come about in a logical and sensitive way for all concerned. Change what may be obvious and leave the rest alone.
