WINSLOW — A property owner using a chainsaw to cut down a tree on Maple Ridge Road took down some power lines after a gust of wind toppled the tree in the opposite direction of that intended, according to the Winslow Fire Chief.

The power line snapped off from the power source, so it wasn’t live.

The man sawing down the tree, whose name was not released, was taken to the Thayer Center for Health by Delta Ambulance for a cut on his thigh, according to fire chief David LaFountain.

At about 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, Winslow fire and rescue received a call about a downed tree and power lines at 607 Maple Ridge Road.

“Apparently a strong wind was blowing this way,” LaFountain said pointing in the direction of the power lines. He said the man “had notched his tree to fall the other way. The wind blew it right on top of the power line.”

LaFountain said even though the wire wasn’t live, rescue personnel still used caution.

“If the house had an automatic generator — like a lot of the homes do up here — it could back feed to that wire and would be re-energized,” LaFountain said. “We treated it like it was hot. We knocked on the door, nobody was home and we couldn’t hear a generator.”

Central Maine Power responded to the scene at about 4:15 p.m.
