The 95th men’s Maine Amateur Golf Championship will begin Tuesday morning without its most decorated player.

Mark Plummer of Manchester, a 13-time champion, withdrew Monday to attend to a family issue.

“He will be missed,” said Mike Doran, director of player development and tournament administration for the Maine State Golf Association.

Defending champion Ricky Jones of Thomaston is scheduled to tee off in the first threesome at 7 a.m. at The Woodlands Club in Falmouth. A three-time winner, Jones is one of three former champions in the field of 132.

The others are Ron Brown, Jr. (1999) of Portland Country Club and Eric Crouse (1998) of Falmouth Country Club.

Plummer’s absence – along with the withdrawal by Mike Nowak of Augusta – opened spots for two alternates: Mike Waterman of The Links at Outlook in Berwick and Cory Hutchinson of Saco-Biddeford Country Club.

Plummer, 62, won the first of his titles in 1973 at Riverside Golf Course in Portland and the 13th at Falmouth Country Club in 2002. He also finished second six times, including in 1999, the last time the tournament was held at The Woodlands.

The 54-hole tournament is scheduled to run through Thursday, with the field cut to 40 plus ties after Wednesday’s second round.
