SOLON — A Solon man remains hospitalized after a dog ran in front of and hit the motorcycle he was riding on South Solon Road Sunday, police said.

Norman Fickett, 77, was in fair condition Monday afternoon, according to a spokesperson at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

The dog, a German Shepherd whose name and owner’s name were not available, died from injuries related to the crash, said Chief Deputy Dale Lancaster of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department.

Fickett was traveling south on the road and was less than a mile from his home when the dog ran in front of him just before 1 p.m. Sunday, said Lancaster.

He hit the dog, causing him to lose control and the motorcycle, a 2010 Harley Davidson, to tip over. Fickett, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the bike, said Lancaster.

He was taken by ambulance to Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan and then transported by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center.

The Solon Fire Department also responded.
