A Brunswick man was arrested Monday after allegedly beating his elderly mother and threatening to kill her if she called police.

Eric Engstrom, 51, was charged with domestic violence assault, domestic violence criminal threatening and obstructing the report of a crime after police were called to the trailer he shares with his mother in Maplewood Manor.

Deputy Police Chief Marc Hagan said Engstrom punched and shook his 75-year-old mother before dawn Monday. The woman, whose name is not being released, had fallen in the middle of the night and called out for her son to help her. Hagan said Engstrom did help his mother back into bed, but apparently became upset when he could not fall back to sleep.

“She woke up to the son punching her and shaking her,” Hagan said.

Engstrom hid the woman’s cellphone, but she was eventually able to call for help, Hagan said. Police found her bleeding from both ears when they arrived at the home at 56 Long St. She was taken to Midcoast Hospital, but police do not know her condition, Hagan said.

Engstrom’s bail was set at $600 and he was taken to Cumberland County Jail. He is expected to appear in court Oct. 7.

Hagan said police had not received any similar calls from the home in the past.
