DEDHAM — Three people were killed in a head-on car crash Tuesday evening on Route 1A in the Hancock County town of Dedham.
Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said the accident occurred when the male driver of a sport utility vehicle crossed the center line about one mile from the Lucerne Inn and slammed into a pickup truck. He was killed, along with the occupants of the pickup truck – a man and woman.
McCausland said the identities of the victims won’t be released until their families have been notified.
McCausland said the crash, which was reported at 5:45 p.m., forced authorities to close the road and detour traffic onto Lily Road.
Route 1A is a very busy road during the summer, giving residents and tourists a more direct way to travel between Bangor, Ellsworth and Mount Desert Island.
Anyone who may have seen the collision is encouraged to contact Maine State Police at their new dispatch center in Bangor, at 973-3700.
