Police in Monmouth will have an extra set of eyes on the lookout for impaired drivers through the Labor Day weekend.

Police Chief Kevin Mulherin said the department has scheduled extra patrols throughout the next three weeks. The extra officer will not handle routine calls and will instead focus his attention on detecting drivers operating under the influence.

The program is similar to one that ran from December into January.

The extra patrols are being funded by a $5,000 grant through the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety. Mulherin said he applied for the grant last October.
