Back in July, my colleagues and I received an email from Lynn Ouellette at Augusta Fuel, representing the Augusta Rotary Club. She wondered if we could use new backpacks, as school was beginning, to give to students who show up without one.

We accepted the offer and, on Aug. 21, she showed up at Lincoln School with more than 35 new backpacks for the elementary schools in Augusta.

In addition to this, when I arrived at school on Aug. 25, my principal showed me Lincoln’s share of the 50 backpacks that the United Way had donated to Augusta schools.

I want to express my appreciation to these thoughtful community organizations for their generous gifts to those students in need who will get them. I have seen before how gifts such as these brighten the day for those who receive them.
