SOUTH PARIS — Lawyers for a Maine woman convicted of manslaughter for being behind the wheel during a crash that killed two of her passengers are asking a judge to sentence their client to community service instead of prison.
Kristina Lowe’s lawyers said in a sentencing memorandum that putting her behind bars serves no benefit to society, but having her speak to students about the dangers of distracted driving would provide great benefit. They also said the 21-year-old Lowe is the sole provider for her child.
Prosecutors have asked for five years in prison.
Lowe was convicted in May in connection with the January 2012 crash in West Paris. Nineteen-year-old Logan Dam and 16-year-old Rebecca Mason died.
Prosecutors say Lowe was reading a text message, something her lawyers denied.
Sentencing is Oct. 1.
