BANGOR — Two juvenile bald eagles rescued from a treetop nest in Bangor months ago are back in the wild.

The state Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife says the two were rescued after one parent died and the other became sick. Avian Haven in Freedom rehabilitated the birds until they were old enough to be released. They took to the sky above the banks of the Kennebec River on Friday.

Avian Haven founder Marc Payne and Unity College professor Brent Bibles released the eagles. The eagles’ male parent was killed after flying into an electrical line and the mother became sick after apparently ingesting a toxin. A state spokesman says the mother was successfully treated and released over the summer.
